How to calculate WHIP
Add walks and hits allowed. Convert innings to a plain number, where each out is a third of an inning. Divide. WHIP is written to two decimals.
WHIP does not scale to a game length the way ERA does, so the same formula works for baseball and softball. It counts base runners a pitcher allowed, but leaves out hit batters and runners who reached on errors.
Questions
Does hit by pitch count in WHIP?
No. Only walks and hits. A pitcher who hits a lot of batters allows more runners than their WHIP shows.
Is WHIP calculated differently in softball?
No. Walks plus hits divided by innings pitched, the same in both.
Is my data stored?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere or put in analytics.
