How to calculate slugging percentage
Start from the hits in the box score and take out the extra-base hits to get singles. Weight each hit by the bases it earned: a single is 1, a double 2, a triple 3, a home run 4. Add them up and divide by at-bats.
Despite the name, slugging is not a percentage. It is average bases per at-bat, so it can go above 1.000 and tops out at 4.000.
